After reading, “Sebastian Socks it Away” to my kindergarten class, I observed that the children were engaged right from the start. As a Montessori Educator, I like that the story used precise wording and gave the children a memorable phrase to remind them to save their money. The children enjoy singing “Sock it away for a rainy day, my mother used to say, for the day will come when you will need some.” By the end of the story, I found the children to be very curious and talkative-telling me about their own “piggybanks” that took on various shapes and forms. The children were entertained throughout the story but especially enjoyed the part about Sebastian not being able to spend his money and at the end wanting to go to the bank to buy more money. The children were very excited when they each received their very own “sock bank.” The value of the book is timeless and will surely enhance the teacher’s curriculum as well as impress parents with its age old adage of saving money.
